Figures in Flux
Emma Gelbard is a Boston-based artist who creates densely detailed images, working primarily with acrylic paints, ink, and collage. She graduated from Cornell University with a degree in Gender Studies, as well as concentrations in Fine Arts, Art History, and Creative Writing. Her work explores issues of identity and its relationship to physical experience. She depicts figures and environments in flux, rendering bodies that fall apart and then reconfigure into visual puns or strange distortions. Repeated marks and shapes mass into abstract, vaguely anatomical patterns. Her work revels in the weirdness of having a body, communicating a self, and being alive.
