The Plume Thistle Fails to Blossom

                                                       the gates of heaven lie at your mother’s feet

               the womb is the holy land         the humblest foundation

mine is made of frailty and error         with greed I claimed my right to be a mother

                                       it was promised to me

                                                                    but purity can’t survive in this belly

 

Joujou is an Arab-American writer who was born and raised in Brooklyn. She recently received her M.A.W.in Creative Writing. She is finally finding the courage to write about her infertility issues-- an issue usually not discussed the Arab community. She lives in Myrtle Beach with her husband of 20 years and their four cats.
